Year 6 Students: Lesson 1 - Introduction to Fractions
Every lesson includes a PowerPoint to revise the topic and a detailed lesson plan.
Why Students Will Love This Lesson:
Students will enjoy this lesson as it connects math to real-life scenarios, such as sharing food or measuring ingredients. Understanding fractions is essential for their daily activities, making learning engaging and relevant.
Sample Questions:
If we share a pizza among 4 friends, what fraction of the pizza does each friend get?
What is the numerator in ?
Can you convert the improper fraction \ to a mixed number?
Benefits to Teachers:
Engaging Materials: Each lesson provides structured resources, saving time on preparation.
Real-life Applications: Students learn to apply their knowledge of fractions in everyday contexts.
Assessment Tools: Quizzes effectively evaluate student understanding.
Objective:
Students will define fractions, identify the parts (numerator and denominator), and distinguish between proper, improper, and mixed fractions.
Assessment:
A quiz with 10 questions will assess their understanding of fractions, including definitions and conversions.
Key Points:
Definition of Fractions: A fraction represents a part of a whole, expressing a ratio.
Parts of a Fraction: The numerator indicates the parts we consider; the denominator shows the total parts.
Types of Fractions:
Proper fractions (numerator < denominator)
Improper fractions (numerator ≥ denominator)
Mixed numbers (whole number + proper fraction)
Equivalent Fractions: Different fractions with the same value.
Real-World Examples: Used in time, recipes, and measurements.
Opening:
Start with the question: “If we share a pizza among 4 friends, what fraction does each get?” Use visuals to illustrate fractions.
Guided Practice:
Students work in pairs to identify numerators and denominators, classifying fractions as proper, improper, or mixed.
Independent Practice:
Complete a worksheet with 10 problems, including definitions and conversions, with explanations for answers.
Closing:
Review key concepts by having students share one new thing they learned about fractions.
Extension Activity:
Provide extra problems for converting fractions to decimals or percentages.
Homework:
Find examples of fractions in daily life and write a short paragraph about their use.
Standards Addressed:
PYP Standard: Mathematics: Understand and use fractions to represent parts of a whole.
PYP Standard: Social Studies: Analyze and reflect on the use of fractions in real-life situations.

I like to ask the class a question, give the class a certain amount of time to solve the question and then show me the answer on their mini whiteboards. I have taken the KS2 SATs numeracy question papers for the 2015 test and combined the question and answer booklets into a single presentation. This is a great way of teaching as there is an instant feedback and explanation as to how to solve each problem. This helps to challenge and consolidate the classes learning.
This teaching resource could be used for whole class teaching and checking, or at home as a one to one resource with a tutor. These teaching resources make maths less stressful and so the students are more motivated to succeed!
I have created resources for levels 3-5 and also separate resources for Level 6 students. All the students should attempt all the papers to both consolidate and strengthen their basic learning and also extend their skills to a higher level.
Welcome to the 'Let’s Talk in ESL!' pack.
This pack contains a 31 Teaching Activity Teacher Guide using these photo flash cards. These activities are quick and fun to do and will improve both your students' memory and vocabulary skills.
***** Please note - these resources provide visual prompts and support to the students, not direct language instruction **************
This set of cards looks at 57 different settings. The teacher describes something in the top card. The students then use this to model a sentence using the bottom set of pictures. There are lots of things to see and describe in every picture. When the students have completed this task, they can repeat it by working in pairs to discuss each picture.
There are lots of different ways you could use this pack. You could laminate them into two cards and get each student to talk about what they had seen in their picture.
Do your students like a structured day? Are they always asking what is next? It sounds like you need a new EYFS Visual timetable.
I use Visual Timetables in all my lessons - it lets the students know what to expect throughout the day. It really helps with classroom management and behaviour management.
Here are lots of different fun teaching resources for students who are learning to speak English as a second language, or for students who want to revise and improve their understanding of English. This is perfect for both an home or school setting.
I have tried to make learning fun. My powerpoints combine the original question papers with the original marking scheme. This means that after each question, immediately comes the answers. My idea is that a teacher shows the question, lets the class answer it using mini whiteboards. Then the students can explain their different strategies and see what would have gained marks and how to improve their work.
This pack contains both Level 3 to Level 5 material and also Level 6 tests. Every child should try every test. This helps to extend and challenge the main group, while consolidating the learning of the more advanced children. Even more effective teaching learning is to pair the advanced and less advanced - the effort of teaching the less able child actually improves the understanding and verbal explanation of maths.
This teaching pack could be used in the classroom for whole class teaching, small group teaching or at home with a tutor.
I collected together lots of different high quality ESL teaching resources and I thought it would be fabulous to share them all in one place! I am sure your students will really enjoy these resources, while you also happen to enjoy the huge discounts!
Are you looking for elementary teaching resources for ESL students? Are you looking for a way to boost your students reading, speaking and listening. This set of teaching resources will help you. Try them today.
• This pack contains 17 templates for creating your own worksheets, for use in lessons, for testing, or for homework. You can use them with any level – your choice of vocabulary and tenses will determine the level.
• This pack also includes a sample set of finished worksheets (with answers) on the topic of “Dentist”. The level is pre-intermediate to intermediate.
• You don’t need to create all the worksheets for a given topic; simply choose the ones you need. The worksheets are in four categories: vocabulary, grammar, pronunciation, and speaking & listening. Of course, you can also adapt the worksheets and include your own activities and categories.
• Remember, as the teacher, you should know the answers to the worksheets! By thinking about the answers and researching what you do not know, your teaching skills will improve.
• The worksheets practise concepts and skills that are fundamental to the You Are The Course Book method of teaching, for example: discussion words, spelling statements, tense conversion, idioms, word stress, sentence stress, collocations, connected speech, discussion, and so on.
• In keeping with the YATCB method, why not encourage your students to make their own activities based on these worksheets – then swap them with one another, or give them to other classes.
• You can write on the blank worksheets then photocopy them for your students, or create your own templates modelled on these worksheets
Are you learning English as a second language (ESL)? Are you looking for a fun way to learn English as a second language? I have developed a way to learn different languages based on my experience as an ESL teacher. This pack has 57 different settings for students to talk about in English as a second language. The worksheets themselves are in English and the students do need to translate the places and objects they see into English as a second language. At the end of the session, the students can play a fun game of word bingo to show they have mastered that day’s vocabulary. Try it, it is a lot of fun for everyone!
A lovely collection of different ESL Teaching Resources to teach a wide range of ages and skills. There is something for everyone in this collection. You will be able to get your class talking!
